Relinquishment
Feel free to ask your case manager about the relinquishment process. It is important to note that the process of relinquishment can vary significantly depending on your location and the policies of the state involved. Some states allow birth mothers to sign relinquishment papers a day or two after birth. This can occur before being discharged from the hospital. In these cases, you will probably sign papers somewhere near the hospital. Other states require birth mothers to wait longer. In these cases, we make sure there is a comfortable, convenient location for signing.
We’ll make sure to discuss all the specifics with you before the placement happens. Understanding all your options can really help ease some of the uncertainty you might be feeling about the process. When you have a clear picture of what’s ahead, it can make it easier to get yourself emotionally ready.
How Will You Feel?
Undoubtedly, signing those papers is emotional, and you are sure to feel a roller coaster of emotions. As much as you try to prepare for this moment, it’s one of those moments that is hard to prepare for, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
Expect Emotions: Be gentle on yourself as you experience these emotions. Know this is going to be an emotional time.
Find Support: Have supportive people who love you surrounding you. While others may not be able to actually be present when you sign the papers, have them there waiting. You will need supportive people around you during this time.
Bond Your Way: You may wish to spend some one on one time with your baby directly before or after signing those papers so you can have some private time to say “see you later.”
